Trained at St Vincent’s Hospital, he completed a Master of Public Health with the University of Sydney, and subsequently completed his clinical PhD at Garvan Institute of Medical Research on insulin-sensitive obesity. His research interests include obesity, insulin sensitivity and endocrine disorders. In our latest interview, he tells us more about his career and research.

Can you tell us about your particular field and research?

My field is endocrinology and my PhD was on insulin resistance and obesity. I enjoy all aspects of endocrinology and am currently undertaking research of Fenofibrate-preventing retinopathy in type 1 diabetes.

What inspired you into endocrinology?

The depth and breadth of various medical conditions, and I love rare endocrine cases. Every case is different and some are intriguing and present with diagnostic and management dilemma.

What do you enjoy most about work?

Patient contact, working as a team and improving the quality of their life and health.

What are you most looking forward to in becoming an editor?

Seeing interesting endocrine cases in all fields of endocrinology and learning from them.

What techniques do you use in your research?

Evidence-based medicine research.

Who/what research has inspired you the most?

Multicentre randomised controlled studies as it is very difficult to run and coordinate but the data is scientifically robust.

Is there any advice you can give to someone just starting off in science?

You have to be passionate, genuinely interested in science before you commence.
